Portadown negotiated a potential banana skin as they came out on top at Portstewart.

The visitors made heavy weather of the first half at the seaside as the hosts proved they were going to be no pushovers.

As the tie wore on though the class of the Premiership side began to show, and second half strikes from Gary Twigg and Darren Murray sealed their passage into the quarter finals.

Buoyed by the large crowd packed into their Sea Haven ground Portstewart started the game on the front foot and Portadown were fortunate to see the offside flag raised against Ryan Doherty as he bore down on goal with only six minutes gone.

Chances were at a premium for the visitors with Ross Redman’s weak shot right on half time the closest they came in the first half.

Portstewart: Maddison, Bradley, Campbell, Neill, Peden, Forgrave, Vauls, Millar (Murray 90), Doherty, Turner (McClements 83), Stewart (Donnell 74).

Portadown: Miskelly, Richardson, Redman, O’Hara, Breen, Conaty (Mackle 65), Garrett, Mouncey, McMahon, Twigg (Soares 83), Murray.
