Alan Kernaghan earned his first win as Glentoran manager with a 2-0 victory over Glenavon.

Goals from Jonathan Smith and Steven Gordon were enough to see off the Lurgan Blues at The Oval.

Smith broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute when he headed home Steven McCullough’s free-kick from the right wing.

The Glens sealed the win when Gordon’s deflected shot looped over keeper Jonathan Tuffey.

Glentoran manager Kernaghan – who was named as Eddie Patterson’s successor earlier this month – said: “I am delighted with the way we went about things against difficult opposition in difficult conditions. We performed pretty well.

“Winning is important and you want to do that by playing attractive football, but it can be difficult.

“However, I think we are heading in the right direction.”
