Two goals from Paul McElroy saw Dungannon Swifts claim victory in this basement battle.

In spite taking an early lead, Warrenpoint crashed to yet another defeat.

They are now a yawning eight points adrift at the foot of the table approaching the midway point of the campaign.

Barry Gray’s side, on an 11-game losing run, had gone in front in the third minute.

A defensive slip allowed Sean Donnelly’s cross to reach Daniel Hughes, and he slotted home from close range.

But McElroy brought the home side level within five minutes.

He collected a pass inside the box, controlled well and drilled home a left-foot effort.

And the Swifts were ahead in the 14th minute.

Kris Lowe’s cross was fumbled by the goalkeeper, under pressure from Andrew Mitchell, with the ball ending up in the net.

Warrenpoint conceded again with half an hour played.

McElroy took possession outside the box and curled home a stylish effort from 20 yards to make it 3-1.

Dougie Wilson saw a 20-yard shot well blocked by the visitors’ goalkeeper.

Mitchell also went close after taking a pass from McElroy, cutting inside but lifting his effort just over.

Things got even worse for the visitors in the second half as Dungannon made it 4-1.

Mitchell found the net with a left-foot finish after a free-kick fell invitingly.

Late on Cormac Burke made it 5-1, blasting home after being teed up by McElroy.
