COLERAINE 1 DUNGANNON SWIFTS 0
Coleraine secured their fourth win in a row for the first time in four years as they beat Dungannon Swifts 1-0 at The Showgrounds.
James McLaughlin was the Bannsiders’ hero once more as he fired in a spectacular volley to seal all the points early in the game.
Coleraine edged in front in spectacular fashion on the tenth minute.
Neil McCafferty’s outswinging free kick was expertly volleyed home by McLaughlin for his tenth of the season.
Adam Mullan tried his luck with a first time volley six minutes later, but it was always rising and cleared the bar.
McLaughlin was full of confidence after his unbelievable strike, and he tried his luck from full 35 yards, almost grabbing a second for the hosts. He picked up Ruairi Harkin’s pass before lashing a piledriver goalwards, which Andrew Coleman did well to tip around the post.
The Swifts were being restricted to very few chances. Andrew Mitchell’s long range effort on 39 minutes summed up their efforts for the first half as it sailed harmlessly over the bar.
Mitchell spurned a great opportunity to draw the sides level on 50 minutes after Paul McElroy picked him out with a great centre, the striker could only direct his header straight at Michael Doherty in the home goal.
Coleraine looked the most likely to add to the score though, and McCafferty almost made it two for the hosts on 66 minutes, but his shot was saved after a jinking run.
The Bannsiders should have made the game safe on 73 minutes after good work by Rodney Brown on the left saw him slide a great ball in for the onrushing McLaughlin, but the in-form hit man dragged his first time effort wide of the target.
McLaughlin went closer five minutes later as Brown fed him again, but Coleman reacted well to tip away the striker’s first time shot.
