Linfield manager Warren Feeney is being linked with a move to Welsh side Newport County.
Newport – who play in English League Two – parted company with manager Terry Butcher and his backroom team on Thursday.
Former Plymouth Argyle boss John Sheridan is being tipped to replace Butcher at Rodney Parade.
It is believed Newport are keen on Blues chief Feeney – who played under Sheridan at Plymouth – to act as number two.
The club said it hoped to make an announcement on Butcher’s successor before Saturday’s home league game against Exeter City.
Linfield will be keen to keep Feeney at Windsor Park with the Blues currently leading the Danske Bank Premiership by four points after nine games.
Feeney succeeded David Jeffrey in the summer of 2014 before guiding the club to a second-place finish in the league last season.
