Motherwell 2 Rangers 2: Jamie Murphy equaliser secures share of spoils for Gers

Having left Motherwell as recently as 2013 the forward confessed to mixed emotions following his equaliser.

“It was a bit of a strange feeling but I was delighted to get a goal. I enjoyed scoring and playing back here because obviously I was here for a long time.

“It did feel a bit odd being back at Fir Park, I almost walked into the home dressing-room when we came in from the warm-up.

“You want to celebrate your goal but you’ve got to be respectful as well. This club’s done a lot for me – they showed me how to become a professional footballer. I owe them a lot.”

The Rangers ace made it clear that in the final analysis the outcome of the game was unsatisfactory to all at Ibrox.

“Ultimately we’re disappointed. We came here to win the game. I know we were 2-0 down and we got it back to 2-2, but, in the end, we were disappointed not to get the win.

“The first half was unacceptable for this club - you never want to be giving away goals and giving other teams a head-start in games.

“Scoring the first goal is important – when teams get the first goal it’s an advantage. We need to all look at ourselves and try to do better in defending all over the park.

“We had to show a bit of character and some pride in the jersey as well. Everyone knew the first-half was unacceptable.”

Murphy at the same time spoke highly of the tactics employed by Stephen Robinson and Motherwell.

“Credit to them - they do what they do well, they put us on the back foot and got a couple of goals but I think that you saw the team in the second-half that should have been there from the start of the game.

“They are set up well, they are organised - but it’s up to us try to break that down.”
