Tributes paid following death of former Irish league and League of Ireland star Robbie Brunton

Tributes have been paid to former Coleraine defender Robbie Brunton, who has passed away, after a battle with illness, at the age of 47.

The Dubliner, who also played for Sligo Rovers, Derry City, Bohemians, Kilkenny City, Monaghan United, Dundalk, Newry Town and Crusaders.

The full back was part of Kenny Shiels side which finished runners-up in the league in 1996-97 and also won the Ulster Cup.

He also played in Europe for the Bannsiders against Grasshoppers.

Coleraine paid tribute to Brunton via their social media channels tweeting: "Coleraine FC is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Robbie Brunton. Robbie arrived in the 1996/97 season and helped the Bannsiders win the Ulster Cup, as well as a second placed finish in the Irish League. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Brunton had been fighting a battle with cancer for the last year but had been a regular attendee at Bohemians games in recent seasons, the club's statement on Twitter read: "We are absolutely devastated to learn of the passing of our much-loved former player Robbie Brunton at the age of just 47. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Celine, and sons Ryan and Darragh, both of whom are Junior Gypsies and attended games with their father."

PFA Ireland tweeted: "So sad to hear this morning the passing of our former management committee member Robbie Brunton. Robbie had a distinguished playing career with most notable @sligorovers and @bfcdublin. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Celine and his family and friends. RIP Robbie."
