The famous win, their first over the Blues, was fully deserved by Barry Gray’s side who fought back from a goal down to win 2-1 at Milltown.

Gray was obviously thrilled with the victory and that his players had executed their game plan perfectly.

“It’s nice to beat Linfield,” said the Point boss.

“Not because it’s Linfield, but because they’re champions, they’re the best team in the league in my opinion and still are even though we’ve beaten them.

“Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, they find a way to win every week.

“We all know that and we knew that tonight, so when we had a lead to protect, we knew we had to protect it right to the ninety-sixth minute.

“It takes massive focus to do that and the boys deserve all the credit they get.

“We stuck to a plan and the players were immense.

I can’t give enough praise to the boys because, after last week’s performance, this was always the game you were fearing a bit.

“In seven or eight years in the Premiership, we’d never beaten them and they were unbeaten this season.

“Quite clearly, we set ourselves up tonight in a way where we probably knew we would get one opportunity.

“Thankfully for us, we’ve taken that opportunity and we’ve been able to manage the remainder of the game.

“There are massive pluses on the defensive side, because it took 10 outfield players to keep Linfield at bay.

“And we’ve been clinical enough in front of goal with two opportunities to come away with the points.”

“It’s great and the players are really happy. It was a huge three points for us.”

Carrick Rangers made a losing return to action on Tuesday night after a two week break after 14 players advised to isolate by the Public Health Authority after coming into close proximity to individuals who tested positive for Covid-19.
