The Northern Ireland winger made headlines at the beginning of the month after breaching Covid regulations to attend a gathering with people outside of his household alongside fellow Ibrox talent George Edmundson.

The pair were both suspended immediately by the club pending an internal investigation, and have subsequently been handed seven-match bans by the SFA.

That punishment will keep the duo sidelined until the end of December at least, and Whelan is of the opinion that a stint on the sidelines could spell the end of Jones’ time in Glasgow.

Speaking to Football Insider, the pundit said: “He won’t play for Rangers again. I just don’t see it.

“He wasn’t in the team much anyway, so he wasn’t doing enough in training and behind the scenes to convince Steven Gerrard.

“Now, he’s broken the rules and broken the trust of his manager, there’s surely no way back for him at Rangers.

“They are doing brilliantly, and the last thing you need is someone upsetting the dressing room and putting themselves first in such a huge season.

“The biggest word in any job, in any relationship between manager and player is trust. If you break that trust then it’s going to be very difficult to rebuild.

“Steven will be offloading him, he won’t want people with that kind of character.”

Jones has made four appearances for the Gers in all competitions this season, scoring once in the 5-1 win over Motherwell.

The 26-year-old had struggled for minutes prior to his ban, however, and hadn’t started a game since October 4th.
