Ballymena United increased Institute’s relegation fears with a routine Danse Bank Premiership victory at the Showgrounds.

Despite the visitors dominating the opening stages, it was United who opened the scoring from the penalty spot on 18 minutes when Gary McCutcheon converted after Gary Thompson had been impeded by Stephen O’Donnell.

Ballymena doubled their lead on 26 minutes when Allan Jenkins converted from close range from a low cross by Eamonn McAllister.

Jenkins headed over from close-range before United added a third on 38 minutes when McAllister scored with a close-range diving header after Jenkins’ effort had been kept out by Martin Gallagher.

The second half failed to reach the same heights as the first period but Institute came close when Robbie Hume’s piledriver was spectacularly turned away by United keeper Tim Allen, while at the other end, Gallagher made a smart save to keep out Johnny Taylor’s point-blank header.
