Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke has forced his way into contention at the Dubai Open on day three after a superb round of eight under par 64.

Clarke had been languishing down in a tie for 37th position but the Dungannon man found something extra to haul himself up the leaderboard in the United Arab Emirates, leaping to a share of fifth on nine under at the The Els Club.

Clarke’s round included six birdies and an eagle two as he closed in on leaders Jbe Kruger, Wang Jeung-hun, Arjun Atwal and Shiv Kapur, who share the lead on 10 under.

Clarke, who won the Open Championship in 2011, had started the event with rounds of 72 and 71.
