Golf: Simon Thornton cruises to victory in PGA North of Ireland Championship

Simon Thornton eased to victory in the PGA North of Ireland Championship presented by Scullion Management Consultants at St Patrick’s GC on Friday.

Leading by seven shots following his opening round 61 on Thursday, the RCD man followed up with rounds of 67/62 on Friday to finish nine shots ahead of nearest rival, Damien Mooney (Ballyliffin).

The 38-year-old Thornton dropped just two shots across the three rounds at the Downpatrick venue, ending the tournament on 17-under par.

Mooney grabbed second place on seven under, with Ciaran Molloy (Blackwood GC) finishing in third on level par following rounds of 69/68/70.
