Belfast club Knock will face Maynooth University in the final of the AIG Senior Cup today after beating Munster champions Limerick at Carton House yesterday.

Irish international Colin Fairweather won the decisive match on 18 to secure Knock’s place in the decider, nine years after they were beaten to the All-Ireland title by Galway.

“It’s nice to be back in the final,” said James Patterson, who played on the Knock team in 2006.

An Irish boys’ international in his youth, 26-year-old Patterson is hoping to add the Senior Cup title to the All-Ireland schools medals he won while at Belfast Institute.

“To win an All-Ireland at senior cup would be a step up,” he said speaking to

“We know we have a decent team so if we play well on the day we should beat most people and if we don’t play well we’ll lose.”

Patterson enjoyed a comfortable 3&2 victory against Michael O’Kelly in the third match, putting the first point on the board for Knock after Limerick’s Pat Murray had taken the top match by one hole.

Marc McMurray put Knock ahead when he beat Darragh Fitzgerald on 17, leaving Fairweather to settle the contest on the 18th where he made par to finish one up against Sean Poucher.

Fortwilliam’s bid to reach the final of the Jimmy Bruen Shield, faltered at the semi-final stage, beaten by Ballybunion.
