Ruaidhri McGee went a long to way to securing his Challenge Tour card for the rest of the season with a joint second place finish at the Challenge de Madrid on Saturday.
The Derry born golfer, playing on a medical exemption, fired a closing round 71 to finish on -17 alongside Portugal’s Ricardo Gouveia, four shots behind the winner, Spain’s Nacho Elvira.
There was very little the chasing pack could do in Madrid as Elvira pulled clear, but for much of the final day McGee was his closest challenger, having started with an eagle three at the first.
The Irishman could never quite do enough to catch the marauding Spaniard out front however, but a birdie at the last got him a share of second.
Simon Thornton fired a final round 72 to finish on eight under par with Peter Lawrie a shot further back on six under. Ballyclare’s Gareth Maybin wrapped up his tournament with a one over 73 to finish on three under.
