Royal Portrush’s Peter Kerr fired a brilliant final round 69 to win the Ulster Boys’ Championship at Castlerock GC.

The 17-year-old Irish International produced the best round of the week to catch and then pass John Murphy (Kinsale).

The RBAI student started yesterday’s final round four shots behind Murphy in a share of third alongside Conor Purcell (Portmarnock).

He went to the turn in one under 35 courtesy of a birdie at the par five fifth.

The plus one handicapper continued to play some flawless golf over his closing nine and while his opponents struggled, he collected further birdies at the 13th, 16th and 17th to win by two shots.

Marc McKinstry (Cairndhu) aced the 214 yard ninth on his way to a final round 76 that saw him finish in a share of 12th.

Meanwhile, world number one amateur, Leona Maguire, carded a three under par 69 on the opening day of the ISPS HANDA Ladies European Masters.

The 20-year-old trails leader, France’s Sophie Giquel-Bettan by three shots.

“I’m really happy because I got off to a great start and made a few birdies in the first few holes, so I was three under though nine,” said Leona.

“I had quite a few chances on the back nine but a few putts didn’t drop. I’d have taken a three under going out this morning and it’s a good score.” I’m looking forward to tomorrow.
