Greenmount international winner Fionnuala McCormack (nee Britton) begins her bid for her third Olympic selection when she competes in the Chicago marathon this weekend.
The double European cross country champion from Wicklow ran 2:41:46 as she came 10th in the European marathon in Zurich in 2014 and will be hopeful of breaking 2:30.
She has already competed in the Olympic steeplechase in Beijing in 2008 and the 5000 and 10000 in London four years later.
“I am looking forward to it,” McCormack said. “I’ve been focusing on road running for the last few months with Rio in my sights. I can’t wait to experience Chicago and try my hand at an American marathon.”
North Belfast star Breege Connolly already with the Olympic qualification will be watching with particular interest.
The race to Rio is hotting up with Lizzie Lee running 2:32 in Germany and Maria McCambridge also in the wings.
Meanwhile, Cathy McCourt took the bronze medal in the European Masters 5000 metres in Nice, France.
The North Belfast girl was at the front for the majority of the distance before just losing out as Renata Hajkova from the Czech Republic won.
Cathy goes again in the 10K road race on Saturday along with club mate Paula Wallace.
