Here’s a poser which would make a good quiz question in the years to come - in which match did the two opposing teams each score a goal with the last action of the game both at the end of regulation and extra time?
The answer is, of course, the Boxing Day Ulster Shield final which will go down as one of the, if not the best, in living memory.
Ards took the honours in the subsequent penalty shoot out but the drama was unrelenting in the preceding 45 minutes.
I say 45 minutes as the first half was a complete bore with only Suzanne Ferris’s opener lifting the tedium.
But from then on it was a fabulous contest although the excitement levels were raised by some poor defending by both sides.
Emma Reid’s blistering penalty corner strike which made it 2-1 with 11 minutes remaining looked to have won it but then Vanessa Surgeoner struck the equalizer with the last hit of the 70th minute.
The drama didn’t stop there as Taite Doherty pounced on a defensive lapse to make it 3-2 with three minutes of extra time left.
Undaunted Ards hit back and Tamara Macleod made it 3-3 and forced the shoot out with the very last act of a pulsating game - wonderful stuff and a credit to both teams.
