The Belfast Giants’ hopes of defending their Elite League title suffered a major blow yesterday as they lost 3-2 to the Coventry Blaze.

The Giants are part of a five-way battle at the top of the table but their third consecutive loss saw them slip seven points behind league leaders Braehead, who also have a game in hand.

Russ Cowley grabbed the winner for the Blaze with just three seconds remaining.

While the wheels may be coming off for Belfast, the Cardiff Devils are still very much in contention for the title and a 4-2 win over the Dundee Stars moved them to within three points of the Clan.

In Sunday’s other game, the Hull Stingrays beat the Fife Flyers 5-4 with Jordan Mayer netting the winner in the last minute.

The Giants return to action with back-to-back games in Belfast next Saturday and Sunday.

First up is Saturday’s clash with the Edinburgh Capitals at 7pm, followed by a 4pm face-off on Sunday against the Sheffield Steelers.
