Craig McMeechan battles to cross country triumph at Dungarvan

Craig McMeechan scored a great victory in the GloHealth Irish Uneven Agegroup Cross Country Championships at Dungarvan, Waterside.

The North Down athlete had previously finished second to Lisburn’s James Edgar in both Ulster and Irish U18 title races as well as coming third in the Ulster U17, but made no mistake this time.

He ran strongly to win the U17s from Eoin McCann of St Malachy’s with the two athletes that finished in front of him in the Ulsters - Fintan Stewart, City of Derry and Christy Conlon, Beechmount - coming fifth and 10th.

Enya Haigney in third and Niamh Heaney, fourth, led Omagh to bronze team medals in the U17 girls with Olivia Nelson from City of Lisburn seventh.

There was gold in the U15 boys for Lagan Valley with Tim Scott in third backed by Cormac O’Rourke, Peter Carty and Callum McCabe. They also took silver in the U15 girls with Molly Dougan spearheading the charge.

Colm Gargan of Shercock won the U13 boys with Hannah Murray from Finn Valley second in the U11 girls. Tomas Haigney of Omagh was sixth in the U11 boys.

Paddy Robb from St Malachy’s was best local in the Novice coming seventh.
