It may be less than two months away, but entries are already piling on for the World Masters, sponsored by Henselite, the final ranking tournament on the Short Mat Bowls Tour calendar
Defending champion Gerry McCabe has already signed up along with a posse of players from all over Europe, including England, Wales, Isle of Man, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden.
Ireland’s Stuart McSorley will also be on show. He is currently in a rich vein of form with 10 tournament wins this season. Again, a huge entry is expected from the host nation.
The Watson Stadium will take centre stage for the two-day bonanza on April 18-19.
“We are aiming to beat last year’s record of 252 bowlers – our capacity this year is 270 players,” said SMBT official Phil Mills. “Players will be competing for one of the most coveted titles in short mat bowls and a prize pool worth over £2000. With all players guaranteed a minimum of six games over the weekend through a tournament model that we devised and brought to Ireland.
“Going into the sixth and final world ranking event of the season once again Irish players dominate the top of the Order of Merit with six players in the top 10.
“Just like last year, we will be running our World Two-Bowl Masters event on the Friday before the World Masters. This event provides a unique challenge to the players ahead of the main event.
“We are also running a promotion to attract new bowlers to our events, with first time entrants into one of our World Ranking events entered into a draw for a set of Henselite bowls.”
