Sullivan Upper had to be satisfied with a fourth place finish at the Kate Russell Cup all Ireland schoolgirls tournament in Galway on Friday.

The Ulster champions opened with a 4-2 win over hosts Salerno, in which Emma Hill, Rachel Barton and Zara Malseed, who hit two, got the goals.

Sullivan were 4-1 up late on and then conceded but at least they got their first win after opening with two losses on Thursday.

“We could have scored more goals but it was good to get off the mark after a disappointing opening day,” said coach Sara Hutchinson.

The Ulster Senior Cup holders then tossed away a 2-0 half time lead as they fell to a 5-2 defeat against Leinster champions St Gerard’s, Malseed scoring both goals. They seemed to have put Sullivan in the driving seat but the first time Leinster champions hit back superbly after the break.

“We were absolutely gutted after the game after playing really, really well in the first half,” he added.
