The Belfast Giants were beaten in a shoot-out by the Fife Flyers last night after the game ended 4-4.

The point Steve Thornton’s side picked up moved them to within four of the Braehead Clan, however it was an opportunity missed in such a tight Elite League title race and was another disappointing result for the inconsistent Giants.

They had gone behind to an early goal from Bobby Chaumont at 3:42 but just over a minute later the Giants were on level terms which Mark McCutcheon tipped home a shot from Kevin Phillips.

Colin Shields put the visitors 2-1 ahead, 59 seconds into the middle period, but they soon found themselves behind after a quick double strike from Kyle Haines and Jamie Milam, both goals coming on the powerplay for the Flyers.

Darryl Lloyd tied the game at 3-3 at 34:23 and it a rollercoaster encounter Adam Keefe put the Giants ahead again just before the second intermission.

There was only the one goal in the final twenty minutes and it went the way of the Flyers as Ned Lukacevic netted to send the game to overtime.

There was no sudden death winner but Flyers netminder Kevin Regan then saved the penalty shots of Jeff Mason, Mike Kompon and Craig Peacock and Lukacevic pocketed the winner beating Carsen Chubak.

It was the third game in three nights for the Giants who were awful against the Nottingham Panthers on Friday but rebounded by beating the Flyers 5-2 at the Odyssey Arena on Saturday.

Kompon scored on the powerplay at 6:31 and under a minute later the lead was doubled when defenceman Cody Brookwell’s initial shot was deflected straight back to him and he dispatched the second effort between the pads of Regan.

Lloyd left Regan dangling at thin air as he netted the Giants third at 17:46 and the home side had something to build on.

They did concede the next goal to Lukacevic on the powerplay early in the second period but with the man advantage of their own at 35:04 Peacock responded to make it a three-goal game. The Giants made it 5-1 at 45:15 when Robby Sandrock’s blast from the point missed the net but rebounded of the boards and onto the stick of Shields who tucked the puck into the net.

The final goal of the game came as time expired, on the powerplay and went to Milam.

The Giants face a doubleheader at the Panthers this weekend.
