Kris Meeke enjoyed some glory and endured some agony at Rally Mexico, the latest round of the FIA World Rally Championship.
The Dungannon driver took his works Citroen DS3 WRC to the top of the time sheets on the third special stage, but on the next stage while fighting for the overall lead of the event he crashed out as did ex-F1 driver Robert Kubica.
However, Kubica got going again dropping a precious 10 minutes and Meeke and his co-driver Paul Nagle were reported to be okay.
Meeke was just 1.2 seconds off the lead but his and Kubica’s crashes were small fry compared to that of Ott Tanak, his Ford Fiesta WRC went off on stage four and into a lake and with 30 seconds the rally car had sank.
Luckily Tanak and his co-driver were able to swim clear.
Reigning World Rally Champion Sebastien Ogier leads by nine seconds over Belgain Thiery Neuville and in third place Jarri Matti-Latvala.
