Derry’s Daryl Gurney caused the biggest upset of the Cash Converters Players Championship by knocking out world champion Gary Anderson 10-4 on Saturday night.

The ‘Dude’ from Northern Ireland had an average of 94.35 as he dumped the defending champion out of the event in Minehead.

“I’m just lucky tonight because Gary was not at his best,” said Gurney. “My scoring didn’t go to plan but the doubles did. However it is important not to get over excited and I’ll have to play much better tomorrow in the quarter finals.”

It was neck and neck until Gurney secured the first break to lead 6-4 and a below par Anderson was unable to put the pressure on and the Northern Ireland man, ranked 41 in the world, went on to seal a surprise 10-4 victory, the biggest TV win of his career.

Gurney will now face Benito van de Pas in the last eight.
