HOCKEY: Denman Ulster Shield and Ulster Kirk Cup finals previews

Two of the most prestigious cup finals in the Ulster hockey calendar taking place at the Playball Pavilion at Stormont on Boxing Day.

All the finalists are training hard ahead of the finals as they make their final preparations ahead of the Denman Ulster Shield and Kirk Cup finals.

Saturday’s double header will be the Denman Ulster Shield at 1.30pm between Randalstown and Queen’s University. Both sides defeated Belfast Harlequins and Lurgan respectively in the semi-finals in November and the odds are the 119th Denman Ulster Shield final will be a tight affair between both sides.

It has been 83 years since Queen’s University last won the Denman Ulster Shield and they will be looking to go the distance on Saturday in the final.

Randalstown last won the title back in 2006 beating Armagh 1-0.

With both squads already drawing 1-1 in the league this could be a match that goes the distance on Boxing Day.

p The second of the Boxing Day finals will be at 3.30pm with the Kirk Cup up for grabs between current Ulster Premier League leaders, Instonians and Mossley who defeated NICS in the rescheduled semi-final at the start of the month.

This, the 118th Kirk Cup final looks set to be an entertaining affair between both squads.

Both sides faced each other at The Glade last Friday past in the Premier League with Instonians taking the bragging rights after sealing a 2-0 win against the Newtownabbey outfit
