Two late goals from the Stena Line Belfast Giants could not stop them losing to the Cardiff Devils, 3-2, at The SSE Arena, Belfast on Saturday night.

It was Trevor Hendrickx who scored the opening goal of the night for the Devils at 13:10, only seconds after Darryl Lloyd’s effort crashed off the post of Ben Bowns’ net.

Little over three minutes later, Hendrickx and Matt Nickerson clashed and both served five minutes for fighting following a melee involving Craig Peacock of the Giants.

There was controversy in the second period with the home side appearing to equaliser, only for referee Dean Smith to rule out the goal and away a two minute penalty to a puzzled Adam Keefe for illegal equipment - a decision not approved by the Captain as well as the large crowd inside The SSE Arena.

Moments later, the Devils scored on the ensuing powerplay to extend their lead thanks to a Joey Martin goal.

Five minutes into the third period, Friday night’s hero James Desmarais pulled one back for the Giants, only for Jake Morissette to give the Devils a 3-1 lead with just over ten minutes remaining.

Brandon Benedict scored his second goal in as many nights at 52:25 to give the Giants hope, however Devils netminder Ben Bowns stood tall in the Cardiff net and helped keep out the Giants and earn a important win on the road in Belfast.
