The Belfast Giants earned a spirited overtime victory against the Braehead Clan in a seven-goal thriller on Sunday night.

Mitch Ganzak was the hero, scoring to seal the 4-3 win after the Braehead Clan had battled back from 3-1 down.

Powerplay goals in the opening period from James Desmarais and Kris Beech had given the Giants an encouraging 2-0 lead.

Braehead hit back in in the next period through Stefan Meyer, before Craig Peacock quickly replied to restore the two-goal advantage for the Giants.

But in a late twist Clan’s Thomas Nesbitt and Scott Pitt scored goals to send the Elite League contest into overtime.

In was a tense finale to the game but Ganzak netted just 50 seconds in to give Belfast a fourth straight Elite League victory.

Last night’s success followed a win over Cardiff Devils and two away to Edinburgh Capitals.

It keeps the fourth-placed Giants right in title contention as they have matches in hand on the teams above them in the table.

The Giants are at home Braehead tomorrow and Dundee Stars on Wednesday.
