The Belfast Giants scored five times in the opening period en route to a 6-3 win over Edinburgh Capitals that saw them move three points clear at the top of the Elite League.

Colin Shields, Mike Radja, James Desmarais, Mike Forney and Matt Nickerson put Belfast in complete control at the SSE Arena with goals in the opening 18.11 minutes.

David Rutherford pulled one back just before the first break and Edinburgh reduced the deficit to 5-3 with further strikes from Trevor Gerlin and Rutherford in the next two periods.

However, Belfast ended any hopes of a shock turnaround when Mike Wilson notched late on to send the Giants clear of the Nottingham Panthers, although having now played four games more.
