BELFAST GIANTS 3 COVENTRY BLAZE 2

The Belfast Giants secured a dramatic Elite League victory over Coventry Blaze to climb to third place in the table on Saturday.

Mike Kompon grabbed a late goal to give the champions a 3-2 win, earning the Giants a third straight victory following last Sunday’s success against Nottingham and two wins in as many nights over Coventry.

The Giants took the lead at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast through Robby Sandrock after just one minute at 10 seconds, but Mike Egener drew the Blaze level shortly afterwards.

However, Colin Shields’ shot was tucked away by Ray Sawada as the Giants took the lead again, only for Steven Goertzen to pull Coventry back on level terms once more on 44 minutes.

The game looked poised for a draw until Kompon emerged as the hero with 37 seconds on the clock, smashing home from close ranger to send the Odyssey crowd wild.

The Giants’ busy festive schedule continues on Sunday night as they take on Edinburgh in Scotland.
