The Winter National Championship for the crowd pleasing National Hot Rods is the main event on the festive Stock Car programme at Ballymena Raceway on New Year’s Day (2pm start).
The fastest cars on the province’s ovals are sure to provide a high speed afternoon of short track action, ably supported by a bumper programme of races for the BriSCA F2 Stock Cars, Stock Rods, Group Two Lightning Rods, Euro Stocks and Junior Rods.
Defending Winter National Champion is Keith Martin from Dungannon.
Martin, World Champion back in 2005, has an impressive record in this event and is aiming to capture the Winter National crown for the third time in a row on New Year’s Day!
It will be far from a foregone conclusion however with plenty of other top contenders ready to challenge for the Gilmore Engineering backed title.
European Champion John Christie from Crumlin is always a popular driver at the Showgrounds and is usually a strong contender for any honours, while former British Champion Clive Richardson is also scheduled to attend in his immaculate Vauxhall Tigra.
Local teenager Jaimie McCurdy caused quite a stir with his strong performances towards the end of 2014, where the Broughshane lad reeled off six wins in a row during the World Qualifying Series and also won the Pat Canavan Memorial Trophy at Tipperary Raceway.
Cullybackey’s Davy McKay, Ian McReynolds from Lurgan and Simon Kennedy from Dungannon are all capable of mounting a serious bid for honours, while Two-Litre Hot Rod ace Gary Wilson from Ballyclare is booked in to debut his recently acquired car.
Alongside the headlining National Hot Rods there is a full programme of support races for the BriSCA F2 Stock Car, Stock Rod, Group Two Lightning Rod, Euro Stock and Junior Rod classes, with the first race getting underway in the Ballymena Showgrounds at 2pm.
