Niall McVeigh had to be on top of his game in the Irish 4 Nations Para Badminton Champions in Lisburn at the weekend to win both the Dwarf Mens Singles and Mens Doubles (SS6 class) titles.
McVeigh raced through to the semi-finals of the singles dropping only 26 points – with 15 of those to clubmate Andrew Moorcroft .
His doubles partner, Luke Irvine, was unable to fully test McVeigh in the semi with Niall booking his place in the final 21-5 21-7.
Scotland’s Bobby Laing caused McVeigh a few problems in the final, particularly in the opening set, but once he settled down the title was always coming back to the hosts, McVeigh winning 21-18 21-8.
The Mens Doubles was as expected a close affair with Bobby Laing partnering Portadown’s Andrew Moorcroft and despite losing the opener 21-14 to Luke Irvine and McVeigh the second could easily have gone to a decider but when it really mattered Irvine and McVeigh stepped up their game and secured the title 21-18.
Emma Farnham beat Deirde Nagle to win the Women’s Singles.
There were gold medals for Chris Stewart and Laura-Lee Jenkins in the Wheelchair Mixed Doubles and Fiona Christie and Laura-Lee in the Wheelchair Combined Doubles.
