Mullingar’s Derek McGee has qualified on pole for the Open and Grand Final Superbike races at the Carole Nash Kells Road Races in Co Meath.
McGee, fresh from an excellent debut at the Isle of Man TT, took the top spot on the Wilson Craig Honda on Saturday for the Open Superbike race with a speed of 107.558mph at the Crossakiel circuit, with Alan Kenney (106.698mph) and Alan Bonner (106.456mph) completing the first three.
Waterford’s Brian McCormack was fourth fastest ahead of William Dunlop, who is riding the CD Racing/Ivan Curran Yamaha Supersport machine on his return to action following his crash at the TT. John Walsh completed the top six.
McGee upped the pace further in qualifying for the Grand Final, clocking 109.035mph for pole, with Kenny next at 108.003mph - 0.7 seconds in arrears - and Bonner in third (107.228mph).
William Dunlop was fourth fastest on his Supersport machine at 106.853mph - 1.5 seconds down on pole man McGee - followed by McCormack and Walsh.
Dunlop took pole for the Supersport 600 race with a speed of 104.928mph to edge out McGee (104.184mph) with Walsh third quickest with a speed of 103.056mph.
In the Supertwins class, McGee set the pace again on the Wogan Performance Kawasaki to head up the front row from Connor Behan and Czech rider Michal Dokoupil.
Roads will close at 11am on Sunday for a 10-race programme.
