The 49-year-old came off his machine during a test at the Red Bull Ring last Sunday, July 26, following an apparent issue with his brakes.

Initially described as critical but stable, he was placed in an induced coma but the regular North West 200, Isle of Man TT and Macau Grand Prix rider is now making pleasing progress, according to his partner, Tamara.

In the latest update on his condition, she revealed that Saiger has opened his eyes and is now talking.

“Yesterday we reached a milestone. Horst has opened his eyes and doesn't need to be ventilated anymore!!!” Tamara said in a Facebook post.

“Today (Saturday) we were able to talk to him for the first time. We were incredibly happy! Horst is totally confused and full on drugs by the many medication. However, there are also some things that worry us - but we are not thinking about them right now, but are delighted that HE is back.

“Thank you very much for your support during this difficult time.”
