Jonathan Rea second as World Superbike Championship resumes at Jerez | Maiden victory for Ducati's Scott Redding

Series newcomer Scott Redding clinched his maiden victory in the championship on the Aruba.it Ducati, with Turkey’s Toprak Razgatlioglu completing the top three.

Reigning champion Rea grabbed the lead off the front row after qualifying second, while Razgatlioglu pushed pole man Redding back to third.

It took Redding until lap 11 to pass Razgatlioglu and the English rider then began to pursue Rea.

Redding, who won the British Superbike title in 2019 art his first attempt, made his winning move on Rea on lap 14 into Turn 6, squeezing the Kawasaki rider wide.

From there, he went on to sew up his debut World Superbike win by 1.1 seconds from five-time champion Rea, while Razgatlioglu held off a charge from Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Ducati) to seal third.

Ten Kate Yamaha’s Loris Baz was next while the top six was completed by the impressive Michael Ruben Rinaldi on the Team Go Eleven Ducati.

Alvaro Bautista (HRC Honda), Marco Melandri (Barni Ducati) and Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team) – who led the championship after the first round in Australia – were the top nine, with Bautista’s team-mate, Leon Haslam, in 10th.

Eugene Laverty earned a point for the BMW Motorrad team in 15th. Team-mate Tom Sykes, who qualified on the front row in third, was a retirement after developing an issue with his S1000RR.

Meanwhile, Aghadowey’s Eunan McGlinchey finished seventh in the World Supersport 300 Last Chance qualifier race as he made his world debut on the Team 109 Kawasaki.

McGlinchey narrowly missed out on qualifying for Sunday's race by just 0.2 seconds.
