Kris Meeke is understood to be closing on a deal to join Toyota’s World Rally Championship programme next season.
The Dungannon driver has visited the Tommi Makinen Racing facility in Finland recently and negotiations with Makinen himself are understood to be progressing well towards a multi-year agreement.
Meeke will not comment on the news but he did state at the conclusion of Wales Rally GB that he would be busy next season. Makinen who will run the Japanese team from his base in Finland rates Meeke highly and he reckons that he would fit in perfectly. Toyota will run at least two cars and possibly three in the 2017 FIA World Rally Championship and testing is expected to be under way from next March.
Meeke’s contract with Citroen, with whom he scored his first World Rally Championship WRC win in Argentina this year expires at the end of this year.
It was widely thought that Meeke would remain as a development driver with Citroen next year as they will make a return to the World Series in 2017
