Mansfield’s Ben and Tom Birchall became the second fastest Sidecar crew in history as they won Monday’s delayed Sure Sidecar 1 TT.
The brothers shattered the race record on their Manx Gas LCR Honda and lapped at 116.060mph on lap two with a stunning effort that left them only six seconds down on Nick Crowe and Dan Sayle’s outright record set in 2007.
At the finish, the duo - who made an emotional return to the rostrum after crashing out in the first Sidecar race last year at the Glen Helen section of the course - had 24 seconds in hand over John Holden and Dan Sayle after three laps.
Conrad Harrison and Mike Aylott finished third on their Honda-powered outfit and revealed they were lucky to escape a ‘big moment’ at Rhencullen on lap one.
Father and son team Ian and Carl Bell completed the top four.
Seventeen-times Isle of Man TT winner Dave Molyneux and passenger Benjamin Binns were forced out on the opening lap on their Suzuki after taking over the lead from Holden and Sayle.
Tim Reeves and Patrick Farrance and Karl Bennett and Lee Cain also retired on lap one.
Monday’s victory was the Birchalls’ second success at the event after they claimed their maiden win in 2013.
The second Sure Sidecar TT is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
