McClenaghan was favourite for gold but dropped to fifth with a score of 13.566.

He had led qualifying for Ireland on Friday in Basel but the 2018 European champion was unable to add another title as he came off after appearing to be in control following an impressive start to his routine.

Armenian Artur Davtyan took gold while Great Britain’s Joe Fraser clinched bronze.

McClenaghan will hope to make amends at the Tokyo Olympics this summer, where he has aspirations of securing a medal.

Meanwhile, Aylesbury’s Jessica Gadirova won her second medal in as many days by securing silver on the vault behind Switzerland’s Giulia Steingruber, who won her fourth European title.

Amelie Morgan and Joe Fraser won respective bronzes on the uneven bars and pommel horse.
