The South African prop, who hasn’t featured since the Champions Cup defeat at Saracens in January, is the only change in the Ulster pack from the side that beat Jersey Reds 19-6 in the opening round last weekend.

Jonny Simpson and John Andrew will join Herbst in the front row, while Irish international Dan Tuohy will once again captain the side from the second row alongside Kieran Treadwell.

The back row will again be made up Stephen Mulholland, Conor Joyce and Lorcan Dow.

Ulster A team coaches Willie Anderson and Kieran Campbell have made three changes in the backline as Ulster chase back-to-back wins; Angus Lloyd starts at scrum-half to partner Brett Herron at half-back, Rob Lyttle joins the in-form Aaron Cairns and Johnny McPhillips in the back three, while McPhillips’ fellow Ireland U20 teammate Jacob Stockdale will start alongside Mark Best in the midfield.

The management team have gone for a 5/2 split in the replacements, with Jonny Murphy, Tommy O’Hagan, Craig Trenier, John Donnan and Nick Timoney offering the forward cover, while Conor Kelly and Lewis Sampson will provide backline options from the bench.

Ulster A’s opponents, London Scottish, also won their opening British & Irish Cup tie, 21-26 away to the Cardiff Blues Premiership Select. They currently sit 6th in the Greene King IPA Championship, with 3 wins from their opening 6 games.
