Queen’s 31 v 25 Malone
Queen’s fought back from 13 points down to earn a bonus point Ulster Bank All Ireland League Division 2A victory against promoting chasing Malone in an entertaining Belfast derby at the Dub.
After a scrappy opening 19 minutes littered with handing errors Malone took the lead when full back Rory Campbell landed a penalty after Queen’s failed to release in the tackle.
Campbell doubled the visitor’s lead four minutes later with a second penalty after the students infringed at the breakdown.
Richard Millar got the game’s opening try on 25 minutes, Queen’s out half Ali Wright throw an intercept which the blindside flanker picked it off and ran 40 metres to touchdown under the posts and Campbell converted.
Queen’s got their first points when they moved the ball the full length of the pitch and after a number of phases full back Connor Kelly scored with Ali Wright converting.
Queen’s led 14-13 at the break when they added a second try three minutes before the interval.
From a quick counterattack they earned a penalty, winger Mark Gordon was stopped short but the ball was recycled and flanker Josh Atkinson crashed over with Wright converting.
Queen’s got their third try on 46 minutes, from a five metre scrum the students worked the ball to the blindside scrum half Liam Free was stopped short but Atkinson was able to pick up and crash over with Wright converting.
Malone scored their second try on 54 minutes, from a scrum penalty Neil Alcorn took a quick tap and was stopped short but prop Lee Barlow was able to pick up and go over with Campbell converting.
Malone regained the lead on 67 minutes when after a series of pick and goes in the Queen’s 22 back row Ben McDonnell barged over but Campbell missed the conversion.
The students got their bonus point when Ireland 7s player Nick Timoney powered over from close range three minutes from full time, Wright converted and added a penalty with the last kick of the game.
