A lodger allegedly beat a man about the head with a metal wall bracket during a row over money, a court heard today.

Gary Oscroft, 35, is accused of inflicting half a dozen blows with an implement, which was used to secure a microwave oven at the victim’s home in east Belfast.

Oscroft, of no fixed abode, faces charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing an offensive weapon with intent.

Belfast Magistrates’ Court heard how police were called to the address on the Beersbridge Road in the city last Friday.

“The defendant was allowed to stay at the injured party’s house and there was a brief argument over money,” a PSNI constable said.

“He alleged that the defendant attacked him with what he described as an L-shaped wall bracket used to secure a microwave.”

It was claimed that the victim was struck to the head six or seven times, and required stitches for the injuries suffered.

Opposing bail, the officer said Oscroft completely refused to engage with police in custody.

Defence counsel Sean O’Hare told the court his client had provided an alternative version of events.

The barrister also questioned how much involvement the injured party will have in the case, adding: “He left hospital before he was discharged.”

Oscroft was refused bail, however, due to the risk of potential re-offending.

District Judge Fiona Bagnall remanded him in custody to appear again by video-link on November 16.
