The Northern Ireland Prison Service has revealed that a staff member has been suspended in connection with an incident which left a number of officers injured.

The Department of Justice (DoJ) had previously confirmed it was investigating the incident last Sunday.

DUP MLA Edwin Poots had initially written on the website Twitter: “A prison officer [has been] scalded with hot water and five colleagues injured.”

However, the DoJ said that the number of officers hurt actually stood at four.

A Prison Service spokesperson said “a prison officer has been suspended pending an investigation”.

The PSNI said last night [Thursday] that “an allegation of an assault in Maghaberry Prison is being investigated”.
