Letter: Dedicated PSNI officers have been betrayed by those in charge of a flawed data system

I have just heard on the news of yet another security blunder by a PSNI member or members resulting in the loss of sensitive information or documents. Where or when is this going to end?

How can anyone from any section of the community have any faith that information received or held by the PSNI won’t be lost and used by the those who are out to cause death and destruction?

I have the greatest respect for many members of the PSNI with whom I have had dealings over recent years and found them genuinely dedicated to do their work but it seems they are being betrayed by those in charge of a flawed system.

I am a former member of the security forces who suffered at the hands of republican terrorism and I know at first hand how vicious and efficient that organisation is in its objective to destroy the normal way of life in Northern Ireland.

The recent loss of information by those charged with protecting us is causing everyone great concern. Having been in the Ulster Defence Regiment and later in the Royal Irish Regiment and worked closely with the Royal Ulster Constabulary I can assure you that this type of security lapse would never have occurred as we were all aware that lives were at risk all of the time.

I and thousands of decent people in all communities had the greatest respect and confidence in the RUC and felt betrayed by those who pandered to the terrorists and negotiated the destruction of that honourable body of men and women who stood against the most vicious terrorist in modern times. Shame on those negotiators and look at the shambles they have left us with now.
