The video here tracks the movement of snow (shown in grey, with darker grey being particularly heavy) across Northern Ireland.

It covers the period from 8pm tonight (Thursday) to mid-afternoon on Friday, and shows few areas escaping the frosty conditions.

It has been compiled by the UK’s official weather body, the Met Office.

Only the easternmost coastal areas of the Province were not covered by any weather warning.

There had also been a number of warnings through the day of impassible roads being closed by police, such as Markethill Road to the south of Portadown, Church Road in Holywood, and Moneydarragh Road in Annalong – the latter being shut due to downed power lines.

The PSNI advised drivers: “If you must travel please proceed carefully and at lower speeds bearing in mind the impact of this weather on stopping distances and braking.”

The coldest time was expected to be 7am on Friday morning, with temperatures of minus 3C expected in Fermanagh, south Tyrone, and south Antrim.

The Met Office said the minimum expected temperature anywhere in the Province overnight looked set to be minus 4C.

It was a similar picture in the Republic’s border counties, with Met Eireann issuing a “status-orange” warning for counties Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, and Louth, among other counties.

The weather is a result of Storm Larisa, which began in the Atlantic and tracked east, leading to predictions of winds up to 50mph and 15 inches of snow in parts of GB.
