Have yourself a grreener little Christmas

Christmas is a time when we are encouraged to spend, splurge, and spoil ourselves.

But with increasing awareness that we need to be doing more to act responsibly towards nature and climate I’ve decided to have a different type of celebration this year. I’m making small changes that can have a big impact, celebrating a sustainable Christmas that is kinder to the planet and to wildlife too.

While glitter might make things merry and bright, did you know that glitter and foil on your cards and wrapping paper means they aren’t recyclable? That’s why this year, I’m ditching the glitter and taking a little bit more care to make sure my paper is suitable for recycling, where possible I am even wrapping my presents in colourful squares of fabric that can be repurposed for use after the big day.

I have decked the halls with boughs of holly…and pinecones, ivy, and dried fruit! I have opted for a natural wreath and garlands to decorate my home. All the materials were from the kitchen store cupboard, or foraged, and then only from abundant sources to make sure I left enough behind for food and shelter for birds and other wildlife. The best bit is when it is time to tidy them away, I can move them to the garden to compost, or make a log-pile for my garden visitors to shelter in.

I’m also giving greener gifts this year. I am going to give the gifts of seeds for planting in the spring, plants I have grown myself, home-cooked dishes, or memorable experiences. Often spending time with my family and friends is the real gift at this time of year, so a shared meal, or trip out to somewhere like a nature reserve or walking trail, makes for a more special and valuable way to show I care and gives us time to catch up and take a breather from all the festive hustle and bustle.

Whatever way you choose to spend your Christmas and give your gifts, charities like the RSPB are on hand with online shops full of eco-friendly gifts, decorations, and suggestions of things to do and see to help you make this time of year a little merrier, and of course, a little greener.
