Man arrested after '˜suspicious approach' made to young girl

A 27-year-old man has been arrested after a suspicious approach was made to a 12-year-old girl in central Belfast.

The approach was made to the child yesterday (August 27).

The suspect is currently in police custody.

Detective Sergeant Phil McCullagh said “Police received a report that sometime between 5.00pm and 5.30pm on Saturday, 27 August a male approached a 12-year-old girl in the Bank Street/Royal Avenue area of Belfast.

“He lifted her off her feet, however she was able to break away.

“She was not injured during this incident.”

He added: “I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact Police at Musgrave on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference 1106 27/08/16. Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
