Mr Nesbitt, who met Mrs May just two days before last month’s EU referendum when she campaigned in his Strangford constituency, told BBC Radio Ulster’s Good Morning Ulster programme: “I regret that the Prime Minister is coming and not engaging with the Opposition.

“I’ve made that point to some officials ... given the fact that she’s flying into Northern Ireland, I think it’s regrettable that she can’t find a small pocket of time to say hello to the Opposition.”

Mr Nesbitt accused the Executive of inaction, saying that the DUP and Sinn Fein “still do not have a plan”.

The Ulster Unionist leader also said: “For nationalists, this is their Anglo-Irish Agreement – a constitutional change being imposed against their will.”
