South Belfast murder victim named locally

The 28-year-old south Belfast murder victim has been named locally as Stephen Carson.

PSNI have launched a murder investigation after the man - a father-of-two - died following a gun attack at a house in Walmer Street in the Ormeau Road area.

Four men forced their way into the property at around 10.45pm on Thursday and shot the man inside.

He was taken to hospital but later died of his injuries.

The PSNI have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

It is understood Mr Carson, who was originally from Turf Lodge in west Belfast, had been under death threat from a group calling itself the West Belfast INLA since his release from prison last year.

It is understood he had been “getting his life together again after getting out of prison and this is very sad”, a source told the News Letter.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Carson on Facebook.

One friend said: “Horrible news to wake up to rip carsey! You were a complete gent growing up and we all had some laughs together chum!”.

Another friend said: “Shocking news to wake up to ! Rip Stephen Carson mate”.

Mr Carson had been serving a sentence in Magilligan prison for robbery.

Sinn Fein councillor Deirdre Hargey condemned the shooting.

“There is widespread shock in the area this morning as people hear of this killing,” she said.

“I would call on anyone with information on this shooting to bring it forward to the PSNI so that those responsible can be caught and taken off the streets.”
