Stormont event marks contribution of Forces' chaplains

Called ‘Faith During War’, it was hosted by Lagan Valley MLA Brenda Hale, and included representatives of churches including the Presbyterian, Methodist and Catholic churches.

They were also joined by the Island of Ireland Peace Choir.

Speaking at the event the DUP MLA, who lost her husband in the Afghan war, said: “One hundred and seventy-nine chaplains died during the war; and in recognition of their devoted work since 1914, King George V conferred the prefix ’Royal’ on the Army Chaplains’ Department. An honour that was costly, but well deserved.

“And so our chaplains are indeed our shepherds. The Forces depend heavily on them, the families and soldiers, sailors and airmen rely on them, and as for me and mine, we wouldn’t have made it without them.”
