A teenager has died after the car she was travelling in struck a wall in Co Galway.

The young female was a passenger in the vehicle involved in the crash in the townland of Porridgetown, Oughterard.

Her death brings to seven the number of fatalities on Ireland's roads since Friday evening.

The crash occurred at around 1.15am on Sunday.

The 21-year-old male driver was uninjured in the collision.

Gardai have appealed for anyone who was travelling on the road at the time to contact them. They are particularly keen to seek drivers with a dashcam.

Elsewhere, six people were killed in border county crashes in less than 24 hours.

Two men and a woman died in a two-vehicle crash at Carricknaran, Co Louth in the early hours of Saturday.

A man in his 20s was arrested in connection with the crash on Sunday. He was detained at Dundalk Garda station.

In Co Monaghan a male pedestrian suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a lorry on the N54 between Monaghan and Clones on Saturday morning.

On Friday night, a man and a woman in their 60s died in a crash involving a car and a jeep on the N55 in Ballinagh, Co Cavan.
