Rangers defender Danny Wilson refuses to get carried away by title talk

For defender Danny Wilson however there was no question of getting carried away despite such a comfortable gap between them and their Edinburgh rivals with ten games remaining.

“When you look at results elsewhere it would be easy to read too much into them - but it’s important to just get the three points on board,” said Wilson.

“We weren’t firing on all cylinders today. It doesn’t matter if we score in the first or ninetieth minute. We created enough chances but we just didn’t take them.

“You need to take it one game at a time. We are in a fairly commanding position at the moment but in the last couple of weeks we have been just getting over the line and sneaking 1-0 wins, but they are just as important. Teams are not going to come here and make it easy for us.”

Saturday’s late win was Rangers’ fifth by a single goal in their last seven games (the other two being drawn) following a run of five successive victories that produced 21 goals.

Danny however was keen to underline that every win should be put into some kind of perspective, and obviously to analyse recent games from a defender’s viewpoint.

“At the start of the season we were scoring a lot of goals - but we were also conceding a fair number.

“We have tightened it up at the back. We’re having days where we’re not great in front of goal and we just sneak the odd-goal win, but it’s the same three points at the end of the day.”

For Mark Warburton meanwhile there was praise for match-winner Harry Forrester whose late strike was his first goal for the club.

“All credit to Harry for a great finish. I’ve known him from a young boy - he’s a very technically gifted player but he’s so keen to do well, and sometimes you can try too hard to impress but we know what he can do and thankfully now the fans have seen that as well.”

The Rangers manager, Mark Warburton, was as always honest and realistic in his assessment of the win.

“It’s a really important three points. We started off slowly today, we lacked a little bit of intensity and tempo - but the good thing is we kept on trying to get forward and be patient,” he said.

“Whether it comes in the first minute or the ninetieth they all count.”
